“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”1 John 3:1a
If you have lived for any length of time you have asked yourself a version of this question: “who am I”? I typically ask myself this question when I have hit a crossroad in life. Your identity was wrapped up in a job, a spouse, kids, a sport, what you look like, how much stuff you have, or any number of things that eventually changed. When they change, or you no longer have them, it leaves you empty. They were not as satisfying or fulfilling as you thought they would be and you find yourself wondering who am I?
The promise in 1 John 3:1 tells us exactly who we are and it is a promise we need to be reminded of daily. It is a promise that gives us an identity that can’t be taken or changed by anyone or anything. Because of the ridiculous love of God to give Jesus to the world and the humble obedience of Jesus to sacrifice his life of a cross for our life, we don’t have to wonder or chase after an identity. We belong to the family. We are a son or daughter of God. And that is who you are.
