February 24 – Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

What is it about a Saturday afternoon nap?! Maybe you’ve been working in the yard, or just got off a shift at your job, or running kids back and forth from stuff, and you finally have that moment of rest. Your mind is tired, your body is tired, and you recline your chair, prop up your feet, and doze off…

I love that rest is important to God. He rested on the 7th day of Creation, He created our bodies to sleep, and He values our rest. But sometimes our souls and hearts need rest. They need a place to be still, a place to lay down burdens and worries, to seek grace, to breathe, etc. Maybe our hearts and souls need rest from the burdens we’ve put on ourselves or the burdens others have placed upon us. I love this promise of rest we have in Jesus because it is an invitation. He doesn’t say, “Go”, but instead says, “Come.” We are invited by Jesus to find rest for our souls. And I would bet it’s probably something we need to do daily. This world, our pace of life, our worries and doubts, our shortcomings and failures, are all burdens on our souls. Jesus knows, and says, “Come to me.” Is Jesus where we find our rest? Let’s trust in His promise and accept the invitation.
